Crying for Scalps: St. George Stanley's Sioux War Narrative

Artist, writer and adventurer Charles St. George Stanley was with General George Crook’s military command for five weeks in May and June of 1876. Later that summer Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper printed several of his dispatches of the campaign along with illustrations based on his sketches. In 1878 he penned a ten-part series of articles in a little known Colorado newspaper recalling the now famous campaign in even greater detail than previously offered.

This most updated edition of “Crying for Scalps” collects all of his known Sioux War articles together for the first time, along with the illustrations that appeared in Frank Leslie’s. St. George Stanley was an eyewitness to the skirmish at Tongue River Heights and the Battle of the Rosebud. His account is noteworthy, exciting and an important contribution to Sioux War literature.

"The most exciting new information about the Great Sioux War that I've seen appear in quite a while." — Jerome A. Greene, author of "Stricken Field: The Little Bighorn Since 1876."
